BJU Press: Educational Content and Artificial Intelligence
-
Introduction
We Value Your Trust
For more than five decades, BJU Press has earned the trust of Christian schools and families, a by providing academically rigorous, biblically grounded educational materials. That trust remains foundational as we thoughtfully engage new technologies. Our approach to AI is guided by transparency, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to our mission.
The Advent of AI as a Business Tool
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool for both organizations and individuals. It can transform how people conduct research, support creative tasks, and manage workflows. Like many responsible organizations, BJU Press recognizes that AI—when used thoughtfully—can enhance efficiency, support innovation, and improve service to educators and families.
As an educational publisher, we recognize the concerns many parents and educators have raised, that AI can be misused in ways that weaken a student's thinking, creativity, and character. We have designed our approach to guard against those risks, guided by our theological understanding and mission.
-
Theological and Missional Context
Biblical Worldview
BJU Press approaches technology—including AI—through a biblical worldview that affirms human beings as uniquely created in the image of God. Wisdom, discernment, moral responsibility, creativity, and relationships are gifts entrusted to people, not to machines.
The Bible reveals that humans are made to exercise dominion over God’s creation (Genesis 1:26–28). This calling demands the development and use of technology that enhances our physical strength and mental powers. However, in a fallen world, technology can not only enhance but can also dull our abilities. Therefore, we must use technology wisely within our core values and processes while seeking to enhance operations.
We believe that technology is a tool to be stewarded, not an authority to be followed.
We recognize that views about AI differ among parents and educators and we respect those differences. Our goal is to continue to serve them with meaningful technology options while remaining true to our mission.
BJU Press Identity
BJU Press offers a transformative approach to education, incorporating biblical worldview, academic rigor, critical thinking, and technology solutions in every discipline, in every grade level. We strive for best-in-class operations to provide the transformative resources that educators need when they need them.
Consistent with our approach to other technology integration strategies and tools, our AI strategy must support—not compromise—this identity and mission.

What We Mean by Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence is the field of computer science that creates and manages technologies capable of executing complex, human-like tasks. BJU Press affirms that humans are made in God's image and therefore rejects any attempt to assign human characteristics or identity to artificial intelligence.
At BJU Press, we distinguish between several common forms of AI:
- Generative AI: Systems that can produce text, images, audio, or other content based on prompts.
- Assistive AI: Tools that support human work through editing, analysis, organization, or workflow enhancement.
- Agentic AI: Systems designed to act autonomously or simulate decision-making roles.
Understanding these distinctions helps ensure AI is used appropriately and responsibly.
-
Guiding Principles
Human First: We prioritize human stewardship.
Technology should support the work of teachers and students—not replace it. We design tools to support instructional integrity, human discovery, and critical thinking.
Biblically Rooted: We anchor our tools in Truth.
Our technology reflects a biblical worldview and is evaluated through the lens of biblical truth. We seek solutions that support educational experiences that encourage wisdom, discernment, and Bible-shaped thinking.
Trusted & Transparent: We protect user data and respect creators.
We practice responsible data and content stewardship, strictly respecting intellectual property and the trust of educators and families through transparent communication.
Responsibly Innovative: We innovate with purpose and within boundaries.
We embrace innovation operating within clear guardrails. Technology solutions are thoughtfully evaluated for effectiveness, appropriate use, and alignment with the mission of Christian education.

BJU Press may use AI to assist in the creation of non-copyrighted content and materials (such as chapter titles and definitions of common words).
Editorial and Production Assistance
AI may be used in limited ways to support editorial processes, such as grammar checks, style consistency, layout assistance, data analysis, or workflow efficiency. In these cases, AI serves as an assistant—not a creator.
Agentic AI

Support for Christian Education
BJU Press serves Christian schools by developing resources that combine biblical worldview shaping, academic rigor, and critical thinking with thoughtful technological innovation. BJU Press materials include AI awareness, such as in assessment creation and especially through digital citizenship instruction, challenging students to learn to use technology ethically and in ways that honor God. Schools can and should choose the amount of AI-related teaching and learning content they adopt based on their own policies and instructional philosophy.
-
Support for Educators
BJU Press recognizes that technology is most effective when intentionally and strategically used by a teacher Educators can leverage digital tools to enhance instruction and engage students with technology in meaningful ways, to help learning become more engaging, personalized, and impactful. Technology tools, such as AI-powered tools, can also assist teachers in ways such as streamlining routine tasks, providing support for differentiated instruction, generating ideas for enrichment activities, and creating additional review opportunities to support students. The time savings create opportunities for more teacher-student interactions which are uniquely human. Acknowledging the potential of AI tools when used appropriately and effectively, BJU Press will seek to provide training and guidance, strategies, and recommendations/activities that address and incorporate wise and ethical AI use grounded in a biblical worldview.
-
Support for Students
Acknowledging that today’s students were born into a technological world and that technology serves a vital role in their future-readiness, we endorse or provide technology solutions that will extend, enrich, and enliven learning, encouraging students to become lifelong learners. Purposeful technology integration can enhance the learning experience and provide students with skills and tools they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Among a wide variety of topics, BJU Press lessons on digital literacy and digital citizenship include guidance in using AI ethically and in a God-honoring way. While AI has the potential to provide strong support for learners, AI, when used inappropriately, can bypass human cognitive, creative development, and God-ordained relationship development. BJU Press believes that AI use by students must be teacher -directed, ensuring accountability and meaningful engagement.
-
Updates
