Teaching Writing & Grammar for Understanding

BJU Press Writing & Grammar

Our vision for our Writing & Grammar line is to equip students to master foundational grammar and writing skills to craft effective written and oral communication that serves others while also engaging and contributing to culture.

BJU Press’s Writing & Grammar program weaves together the many elements needed to understand and communicate clearly in the English language, helping them move beyond memorizing rules to truly understanding how English works in everyday communication.

In elementary courses, writing, grammar, mechanics, listening, speaking, and viewing (visual literacy) all come together to provide students with a solid English language arts foundation so they can enjoy and effectively use God’s gift of language.

In secondary courses, grammar becomes a practical tool for shaping clear, purposeful writing that helps students think more deeply, analyze ideas, and build well supported arguments. Throughout the program, students develop their craft and learn to write for real-world contexts.

Materials

Worktext

The Worktext teaches traditional grammar through teacher and mentor text modeling as well as independent practice. Students learn writing skills across many genres (including opinion, informational, and narrative texts) through the five steps of the writing process, including proofreading activities that improve critical thinking and self-evaluation. Chapter reviews and cumulative reviews provide a spiral review of skills. Each worktext also contains a writing handbook with a thesaurus, charts for student reference, and more.

Teacher Edition

The Teacher Edition provides instructors with the support they need to teach writing and grammar effectively. Lessons include margin notes for lesson content and planning use, pretests for assessing student knowledge, suggested lesson objectives, ESL strategies, cross-curricular links, biblical worldview discussions, and many other tools. These tools help teachers develop their students’ knowledge, critical-thinking skills, and biblical worldview.

Assessments & Assessments Answer Keys

Assessment packets include age-appropriate and grade-level summative assessments of grammar concepts. Each assessment aligns with the objective stated in the teacher edition. Rubrics for writing assignments are available in Trove and with the instructional aids in the teacher edition.
